The Family

More than once, a photographer has been asked to photograph an engagement, a wedding, a birth, or a family celebration. I recall the first wedding I ever photographed as a young man, while vacationing in a rural village in the Andes.

One late afternoon, my wife and I witnessed a small wedding taking place inside an indigenous Spanish colonial stone church. Carrying my 35mm film camera, I stepped through a massive door into a dimly lit room, illuminated only by dusty windows.

As the couple walked out of the church, and family and friends showered them with rice, I captured a shot. Just as I snapped my last picture, the couple approached me, requesting a photograph. They embraced us warmly, and we departed.

My beautiful picture

A month later, while processing the rolls of film, I came across images of a wedding couple. It was then that I remembered Juan and his wife in the Andes mountains. A unique emotion welled up in me as I looked at these colorful images. I placed them in an envelope and sent them first class to Urubamba, Perรบ.

One day, while working in my studio, I received a letter: “Walter, I want to thank you for the only remembrance of my wedding day. Maria and I want to invite you to our home, and we would be enchanted to see you soon.- Juan.”

Today, I enjoy spending time with nice people and enjoying time together.
